Short answer: A real full detail is a complete hand exterior and interior service: wash and dry, a paint sealant, wheel and tire cleaning, exterior and interior glass, a full vacuum, and a wipe-down of every interior surface — dashboard, console, door panels, cup holders. It does not include machine polishing, wax buffing, a multi-year protective coating, or engine bay cleaning at most shops that do genuinely honest work, ours included. At XN, that exact package is the XN Standard Full for $299, and a deeper tier called the XN Black Full ($399) adds a clay bar decontamination pass and a deep interior steam clean for cars that need more than routine upkeep.
Search "what's included in a full car detail" and you'll get a dozen articles listing the same generic checklist: wash, clay bar, polish, wax, engine bay, tire shine — presented as if every detailer bundles all of it into one flat-rate service. In practice, "full detail" means wildly different things depending on who's selling it, which is exactly why people ask the question in the first place and why the generic answer isn't actually useful. Below is what's really in ours, item by item, with the prices attached, plus the honest list of what a full detail does not fix — because knowing that part matters just as much before you book.
Why the Generic Checklist Doesn't Actually Answer the Question
Most detailing guides are written to describe the industry in general, not any specific business, so they list every possible add-on as if it's standard: clay bar decontamination, machine polishing, carnauba wax, engine bay degreasing, headlight restoration. Some shops include a few of these in their base price. Many charge extra for each one. A handful — polishing and wax buffing especially — require a powered buffer and an abrasive compound, which changes the skill level, time, and price involved enough that folding it into a flat "full detail" quote is often where the real sticker shock at pickup comes from. The only way to actually answer "what's included" is to name a specific package at a specific price, which is what the rest of this covers.
The Exterior Half, Step by Step
Every XN full detail starts outside, and every step is done by hand — no automated brushes, no touchless high-pressure-only wash that just blasts dirt around instead of lifting it off.
- Hand wash and hand dry. A pH-neutral shampoo, applied and rinsed by hand, followed by a microfiber hand dry rather than an air blower that can leave water spotting.
- Paint sealant. Applied fresh to every panel, giving a genuine gloss boost and roughly three months of protection against sun, sap, and everyday grime.
- Wheel and wheel-barrel cleaning. Brake dust builds up fastest of anything on a car, and the barrel — the inner lip of the wheel most washes skip entirely — gets cleaned too.
- Tire and trim dressing. Tires and exterior plastic trim get a dressing so they don't look chalky and gray a week after the wash.
- Exterior window cleaning. Streak-free, inside the same visit rather than a separate service.
- Door jamb wipe-down. The strip of paint you see every time you open the door, and one of the most commonly skipped spots industry-wide.
The Interior Half, Step by Step
The interior side is where a full detail earns the word "full" — it's the difference between a wash and a full detail.
- Full vacuum. Seats, carpet, trunk, and floor mats, including under the seats and in the seat tracks where crumbs and grit actually collect.
- Dashboard and center console detail. Wiped down and dressed so it doesn't look flat or dusty an hour later.
- Door panels and door pockets. Cleaned out, not just wiped over — pockets are where coins, wrappers, and old parking passes accumulate.
- Interior window cleaning. The inside of the windshield especially, which fogs and films from off-gassing plastics faster than most people realize.
- Thorough surface wipe-down. Every interior panel, not just the visible ones — this is the step that makes the difference between "vacuumed" and "detailed."
| Package | Price | Scope | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| XN Standard Exterior | $125 | Hand wash, sealant, wheels & tires, exterior glass | A car that's clean inside but looking tired outside |
| XN Standard Interior | $225 | Full vacuum, dash, door panels, interior glass, wipe-down | A daily driver whose interior needs the most attention |
| XN Standard Full | $299 | Everything above, both halves combined | Routine full-car upkeep — our most-booked package |
| XN Black Full | $399 | Everything in the Standard Full, plus clay bar, deep sealant, iron/tar removal, steam clean, leather care | A car that hasn't been detailed in months, or needs bonded contamination removed |
What a Full Detail Does NOT Include at XN (And Why That's the Honest Answer)
This is the part most guides skip, and it's the part that actually protects you as a buyer. A full detail, at XN or anywhere doing genuinely honest work, is a cleaning, decontamination, and protection service — not a correction service.
- No machine polishing or buffing. Removing swirl marks or fine scratches means cutting down a thin layer of clear coat with an abrasive compound and a powered buffer. It's a specialized job with real risk of burning through the clear coat if done wrong, and it's not something XN offers. If a "full detail" quote you're comparing includes this, ask what happens if it goes wrong — that answer tells you a lot about the shop.
- No multi-year protective coating. Our paint sealant lasts about three months and is applied by hand in every full detail. A multi-year protective coating is a completely different product category with its own prep and cure process, and we don't sell it. Anyone quoting a "full detail" that includes multi-year paint protection is quoting two separate services as one.
- No clear film protection or window tint. Both are installation trades, not detailing — they involve cutting and applying material to the body or glass, and neither is part of what we do.
- No engine bay cleaning. Modern engine bays have exposed sensors and connectors that shouldn't get wet without vehicle-specific knowledge. It's a real service some shops offer carefully; it's just not one of ours.
If a quote for a "full detail" is dramatically higher than $300-400 and doesn't itemize what's in it, ask directly whether polishing, a multi-year coating, or film protection is bundled in — a legitimate shop will tell you plainly, and the price difference between a cleaning-and-sealant detail and an abrasive-restoration-and-coating job is real and should be obvious upfront, not discovered at pickup.
How Long It Actually Takes
A standalone exterior detail runs about 1.5 to 2 hours. A standalone full interior runs 2.5 to 4 hours. Combined as the XN Standard Full, plan on 4 to 6 hours depending on the vehicle's size and how much has built up since the last detail — a lightly used sedan and a truck that does daycare pickup with a dog in the back are genuinely different jobs, and we'll give you a specific estimate when you book rather than a generic one.
When the Standard Full Isn't Enough
If your car hasn't been detailed in several months, or it's been sitting under trees dropping sap or picking up hard water spotting without a wash in between, bonded contamination builds up faster than a routine wash addresses. That's exactly what the clay bar pass in the XN Black Full ($399) is for — it lifts embedded grit and residue a hand wash alone can't reach, ahead of the deeper sealant application. For a car that stays reasonably maintained but you don't want to think about scheduling, our monthly membership keeps a set cadence going so it never gets to that point.
When You Actually Need a Specialist, Not a Detailer
Sometimes the honest answer is that a detail isn't the right service at all. Deep scratches down to the metal, dents, cracked windshields, and heavy oxidation that's beyond a sealant's reach are body shop or glass shop work. If what you actually want is a mirror-flat show finish with zero swirl marks, or multi-year paint protection, that's an abrasive paint restoration specialist or a protective-coating installer — a different trade with different equipment than what a mobile detailer brings to your driveway. We'd rather point you in the right direction than take a job we can't finish the way you're picturing it.
The products we actually use
Every wash uses a Chemical Guys pH-neutral shampoo with the two-bucket method, and interior fabric and carpet work uses their cleaners too. Leather seating gets cleaned and conditioned with Meguiar's leather care products. The paint sealant on every full detail is Meguiar's or Gyeon, and Gyeon's glass and interior line handles streak-free window work.
None of this is a multi-year protective coating — Gyeon is best known industry-wide for that category, but the Gyeon products on our truck are sealant, glass, and interior only, and a three-month sealant is a genuinely different product from a multi-year coating. If what your car actually needs is swirl removal or machine polishing to level out the clear coat, that's outside what a full detail — ours or an honestly-run one anywhere — is built to do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a full detail the same thing as a car wash?
No. A car wash cleans the exterior paint and maybe the wheels, usually with automated brushes, in about 10 minutes. A full detail is a hand process that covers the full interior and exterior of the vehicle — vacuuming, dashboard and door panels, interior and exterior glass, wheels, tires, and a paint sealant — and takes hours, not minutes, because every panel and surface gets individual attention rather than a drive-through pass.
Does a full detail include waxing or a multi-year protective coating?
XN's full detail includes a paint sealant, applied by hand, that lasts up to about three months and gives a genuine gloss and protection boost over a bare wash. It is not a multi-year protective coating — that's a separate product category we don't sell, and we'd rather tell you that directly than let a sealant get sold as something it isn't.
Will a full detail remove scratches or swirl marks from my paint?
No, and any guide that implies otherwise is describing a different service. Removing swirl marks or fine scratches requires machine polishing — cutting a thin layer of clear coat down with an abrasive compound and a buffer. That's a specialized, higher-risk service with its own equipment and training, and it's not something XN offers. A full detail cleans, decontaminates, and protects the paint that's already there; it doesn't correct it.
What's the actual difference between the XN Standard Full and the XN Black Full?
The XN Standard Full ($299) is the complete hand wash, paint sealant, wheel and tire, and full interior package described above. The XN Black Full ($399) includes everything in the Standard Full plus a clay bar decontamination pass, a deeper multi-stage sealant, iron and tar removal, a deep interior steam clean, and leather cleaning and conditioning. The Black Full is the right call if your car hasn't been detailed in a while or picks up a lot of bonded contamination — bird droppings, tree sap, brake dust — between visits.
How long does a full detail actually take?
For the XN Standard Full, plan on 4 to 6 hours depending on the vehicle's size and condition. A standalone exterior detail runs 1.5 to 2 hours, and a standalone full interior detail runs 2.5 to 4 hours. We'll give you a specific time estimate for your vehicle when you book, since a lightly used sedan and a truck with three kids and a dog are very different jobs.
Do I need to be home while it's done?
No. Most customers give us access to the driveway, an outdoor tap, and a power outlet, then go about their day — to work, errands, or just back inside. We'll text you when it's done. If your property doesn't have outdoor water and power access, dropping off at our Santa Clara shop is the alternative.
Is the engine bay cleaned as part of a full detail?
No — engine bay cleaning isn't part of any XN package. Modern engine bays have a lot of exposed electrical connectors and sensors, and we'd rather not introduce water and degreaser near them without the vehicle-specific knowledge that job deserves. If that's something you specifically want, ask us when you book and we can talk through whether it makes sense for your vehicle.
My car has heavy pet hair, stains, or odor — does the Standard Full handle that?
The Standard Full's vacuum and wipe-down pass handles routine mess well, but deeply embedded pet hair, set-in stains, or persistent odor are exactly what the Black Full's deep steam clean and upholstery work are built for. If odor is the main complaint, mention it when you book — a genuinely bad odor case sometimes needs more time than either package assumes, and we'd rather scope that honestly upfront than rush it.
What if I only want the outside or only the inside done?
That's the XN Standard Exterior ($125) or XN Standard Interior ($225) — both real standalone packages, not a discount trick to upsell you into the full package once we arrive. The Standard Full at $299 is priced as a genuine bundle of both, which is why most customers choose it, but there's no obligation either way.
