The Bay Area has more Teslas per capita than almost anywhere in the world. If you own one, you've probably noticed that keeping it looking good requires a bit more care than a typical car. Here's what you need to know — and what to watch out for.

Why Teslas Are Different to Detail

Tesla's paint is softer than most traditional manufacturers. This means it shows swirl marks, fine scratches, and water spots more easily — especially on white and dark colors. Automatic car washes with rotating brushes are particularly damaging to Tesla paint, and Tesla themselves recommend hand washing only in their owner's manual.

The good news: soft paint also responds exceptionally well to proper detailing. A well-sealed Tesla paint job looks genuinely stunning — arguably better than it looked leaving the factory.

The Door Handles

Teslas have retractable or flush door handles on most models. These require care — applying too much product inside the recess, or using the wrong type of applicator, can leave residue that makes them sticky or gum up the retract mechanism. We detail around them carefully, using appropriate brushes and minimal product in the mechanism area.

Charging Port Area

The charging port on a Tesla is a painted panel that opens electronically. The surrounding area tends to accumulate grime from the charging cable, and the port door itself needs to be handled carefully during an exterior detail. We always make sure the port is closed before any wash stage.

The All-Glass Roof

Most Tesla models have a large glass roof panel. This needs to be treated with an appropriate glass cleaner — not the same product used on painted surfaces. We clean it separately with a dedicated glass product that doesn't leave streaks or residue on the tinted interior side.

Interior: Vegan Leather and the Large Screen

Tesla interiors use a synthetic vegan leather material that's durable but needs proper cleaning — standard interior products can leave it looking dull or slightly tacky. The large touchscreen also needs to be cleaned carefully with a screen-safe microfiber cloth, never with anything that leaves moisture in the edges.

The white interior option looks stunning when clean and terrible when dirty. It's one of the most rewarding interiors to detail — a properly cleaned white Tesla interior looks like it just left the showroom.

For Model 3 and Model Y owners

The rear trunk area has an exposed felt lining that collects dust and fine debris. We vacuum it thoroughly as part of every interior detail — most standard car washes never touch it.

How Often Should You Detail a Tesla?

Given the paint sensitivity, we recommend Tesla owners detail every 2–3 months rather than the 3–4 month standard for most cars. Between details, hand washing only — no automatic brushes. If you want to go between details longer, a fresh coat of our paint sealant extends protection significantly.

We Detail Teslas Regularly

We work on Teslas frequently across Palo Alto, Mountain View, San Jose, and throughout the Bay Area. We know the quirks — the charging port, the flush handles, the vegan leather — and detail accordingly. Check out some of our Tesla owner reviews to see what customers say about the results.

The products we actually use

Premium paint and premium interiors are less forgiving, not more, so the product list is deliberate. Hand wash with a pH-neutral Chemical Guys shampoo, two buckets with grit guards, and wheel-only tools that never touch the bodywork. Paint protection is a Meguiar's or Gyeon sealant rated for roughly three months of Bay Area sun, sap and hard water. Interiors get Meguiar's leather cleaner and conditioner, with soft-bristle brushes for stitching, vents and piano-black trim that marks if you look at it wrong.

What matters just as much as what we use is what we don't attempt: we're not in the business of resurfacing paint or applying long-term coatings. Our job is prevention — keeping good paint clean, sealed and protected so it never needs that kind of intervention in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tesla paint really softer than other cars?

Yes. Tesla factory paint is known to be thinner and softer, so it swirls and scratches easily in automated washes. Hand washing with microfiber and pH-neutral soap is the safe way to keep it clean.

Can you detail a Tesla without damaging sensors and cameras?

Yes. We hand-clean carefully around cameras, sensors, charge ports, and flush door handles, avoiding the high-pressure spray and brushes that can disturb sensitive components.

How much does it cost to detail a Tesla in the Bay Area?

A Tesla detail runs from $125 for exterior to $400 for the complete package, depending on model size and condition, with mobile service to your home or office at no travel fee.
